UK deploys micro-robot technology‎ to reduce spending on road construction

The government of the United Kingdom is hoping to cut down huge expenses on road construction not to mention disruptive sets of roadworks by deploying micro-robot technology.

The government has announced investments totalling almost £27m in a series of research projects to allow for pipework and tunnel repairs under roads without having to dig them up.

It is hoped one centimetre long micro-robots will be able to locate and mend pipes, potentially saving the economy £5bn annually and boosting productivity as fewer motorists and loads get stuck.

University of Sheffield Professor Kirill Horoshenkov is leading a consortium of scientists from Birmingham, Bristol and Leeds universities to develop the technology.
