Opposition calls for May's resignation after election gamble backfires

The departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union has officially been signed into law by British Prime Minister Theresa May following June’s referendum which resulted in a vote to leave the EU.

Moments after signing the letter which officially now gives the UK and the EU two years to negotiate a Brexit deal, May said there is no turning back for Britain even as the Parliament has officially been told that the exit process is underway.

A letter announcing Britain’s exit has now been delivered to the European Council president Donald Tusk.

In a statement in the Commons, the prime minister said this marks “the moment for the country to come together”.

Labour said it respected the decision of the British public but vowed to hold the government to account. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, said: “Britain is going to change as a result.

The question is how? It will be a national failure of historic proportions if the prime minister comes back from Brussels without having secured protection for jobs and living standards.”
