Days after returning from a secret trip to Israel where she had closed door meetings with Israeli officials in what she said was a family holiday to the country, UK’s international development secretary, Priti Patel has resigned.

Patel in her resignation letter apologised to UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson for failing to inform them about the meetings she had with Israeli officials.

“My actions fell below the standard of transparency and openness I had promoted and advocated,” she said.

Reports say Patel held 12 undisclosed meetings, including one with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during her 13-day visit to Israel which saw her travel with a lobbyist.

Patel admitted after the visit that she had wanted to give British aid money to the Israeli army in the Golan Heights after her meetings with Israeli officials which were not authorised in advance by the UK Government.
