UK Parliament votes in favour of early general elections

Less than 24 hours after British Prime Minister Theresa May called for an early general election over Brexit, British Members of Parliament sitting earlier today cleared the way by voting in favour of the move.

May surprised the UK political space by calling for an early general election, seeking a stronger mandate in talks over leaving the European Union, saying she was seeking a vote on June 8, less than halfway through the government’s five-year term.

The British Prime Minister easily cleared the hurdle needed under the Fixed Term Parliament Act to bring the poll forward from the scheduled date of 2020.

With Mrs May needing the support of 434 MPs – two thirds of all seats in the House of Commons – 522 voted for the early election, with just 13 against.

Nine Labour MPs and one SDLP – Alasdair McDonnell – were among those who voted against the motion.
