UK PM May defends decision to join military strike against Syria

Days after joining the allied forces led by the US in an attack on several chemical weapons making sites in Syria, UK Prime Minister Theresa May says the coordinated attack was in national interest.

May added that the attack was in response to a suspected chemical weapons assault in the former rebel stronghold of Douma and rejected claims of US pressure.

The UK Prime Minister who was speaking at the House of Commons on Monday, also added that the attack was in an attempt to “further prevent the use of chemical weapons” in Syria.

“We have not done this because [US] President [Donald] Trump asked us to do so,” she told parliament.

“We have done it because we believe it was the right thing to do, and we are not alone.”

May’s comments are coming days after opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn criticised the move saying the UK PM should have sought parliamentary approval before joining the military strike against Syria.

Corbyn who said May could face a backlash in parliament for her decision also described the allies bombing of Syria as “legally questionable” and risks further escalating “an already devastating conflict”.

He also added that the strikes will make assigning blame for the use of chemical weapons in Syria “less, not more, likely”.
