Embattled UK Prime Minister Theresa May who says her country needs a period of stability will stay on as leader and has formed a minority government to deliver Brexit in the wake of a disastrous night for Conservatives which left the UK with a hung parliament.

Speaking at Downing Street after outlining her intentions to the Queen at Buckingham Palace the Prime Minister said: “What the country needs more than ever is certainty and having secured the largest number of votes and the greatest number of seats in the General Election it is clear that only the Conservative and Unionist Party has the legitimacy and ability to provide that certainty by commanding a majority in the House of Commons.”

Labour leader James Corbyn has told May to step down after her election gamble to win a stronger mandate appeared to have backfired.

A joint poll by BBC, SKY, and ITV news said May’s ruling Conservatives would win 314 seats, short of a majority in Britain’s 650-seat parliament. The opposition Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, was projected to win 266 seats.

But no party won enough seats to have a majority in the House of Commons leaving the UK with a hung parliament with the two major parties, Conservatives and Labour, forming a coalition government with one of the smaller parties.
