UK reduces terrorism alert from "critical" to "severe"

Days after raising terror alerts to “critical” following Monday’s attack bomb attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, which left 29 people dead, terror alerts in the UK have been reduced to “severe”.

The change was announced on Saturday by British Prime Minister Theresa May who noted that the change indicates an attack is highly likely, not imminently expected.

Following May’s announcement, London mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted, “Security plans will remain in place this weekend — including additional policing for major events and the army helping with police guarding duties.”

Khan continued, “I encourage all Londoners to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police.”

The British PM also cited progress in the investigation for the change in threat level, but urged people to remain vigilant.

ISIS claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack which saw the assailant use an improvised explosive device that off as thousands of – mostly young – fans streamed out of Manchester Arena in the northern English city at the end of Grande’s performance.

The attack was described by May as “the worst attack the city has experienced.”
