UN JERUSALEM VOTE: Trump threatens countries with aid cut if they vote in favour of draft resolution

A riot act has been issued by President Donald Trump of the US warning countries that vote in favour of a United Nations resolution condemning and rejecting the decision to recognise Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel.

Trump while speaking at a White House briefing threatened countries with aid cut if they vote in favour of the draft resolution and also noted that the US would be “watching those votes” in the General Assemby.

“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Reuters news agency quoted Trump as saying.

The UN General Assembly will hold an emergency session on Thursday to vote on the controversial US decision.

The draft resolution according to reports was backed 14 other Security Council members, including many US allies, highlighting Washington’s increasing isolation over an issue.

Reports say the decision to recognise occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital was hotly contested by Turkey, Palestine and other countries with Ankara said to be at the forefront of galvanising efforts on passing the resolution at the UN General Assembly against the decision.

Turkey, Palestine and other parties pushed the issue to the UN General Assembly, where all 193 members of the international organisation were represented on Monday.
