The police in Rivers State has confirmed the killing of a 24-year-old final year law student of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, to death.
The deceased, simply referred to as Matilda, was said to have been found in a pool of her own blood on Tuesday at her off campus residence close to the university gate in Port Harcourt.
According to a source in the school, the killers broke into the victim’s apartment at night and allegedly raped her before stabbing her to death, a development that forced most of her course mates to shun classes on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the body of the deceased had been recovered and deposited in a mortuary.
He however dismissed reports that she was raped before stabbed to death.
He said: “That she was raped is not the true reflection of what happened. But I can confirm that a young woman of about 24 years, who was staying off campus, was killed on Tuesday by assailants.
“The assailants stabbed her to death. We have recovered the corpse and it is in the mortuary. We have spoken to her family and investigation is ongoing as the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department. No arrest has been made so far.”
