US pulls-out from UN human rights council

The United States has dismissed claims made by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader who pointed accusing fingers at its ‘enemies’ for sparking days of violent protests in the country over rising fuel and food prices.

Such claims were dismissed by the US as “complete nonsense” after Khamenei had made the accusation in his first comments on the protests.

Nikki Haley, US envoy to the UN said the protests which has claimed 22 lives thus far were “spontaneous”, adding that the US planned to call an emergency UN meeting on the situation.

Analysts say Ayatollah’s reference to “enemies” is a swipe at Israel, the US and regional rival Saudi Arabia.

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran who spoke after the outbreak of protests said people in the country have the right to protest but warned that violent anti-government demonstrations are unacceptable.

Iranian authorities have also blocked access to Instagram and Telegram social media Apps in the country after a video of two dead demonstrators who passed away after sustaining gunshot wounds fired by anti-riot police went viral.
