A demand has been issued by the US State Department calling on Iran to immediately release American citizens detained on “fabricated” national security charges in Tehran.
The call came on the same day a US man, reportedly of Chinese origin was sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court in Tehran.
“We call for the immediate release of all US citizens unjustly detained in Iran so they can return to their families,” the State Department said on Sunday.
An Iranian spokesman announced the sentencing of the US citizen for alleged “infiltration” of the country even as the Center for Human Rights in Tehran named the man as Xiyue Wang, a 37-year-old Princeton University researcher.
Recall two days ago that Iran blamed US President Donald Trump’s “arbitrary and conflicting policies” for the rise in global security threats.
The Asian country also rejected the U.S. president’s description of Tehran as a rogue state with tempers flaring since the election of Trump, who has often singled out the Asian country as a key backer of militant groups.
