US charges, declare 9 Iranian hackers wanted

Nine hackers of Iranian descent have been charged and declared wanted by authorities in the United States of America for stealing information from more than 300 universities in 22 countries around the world.

According to the Deputy US Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the wanted men breached university computer systems and stole intellectual property and other research material.

“They hacked the computer systems of approximately 320 universities in 22 countries. One hundred forty-four of the victims are American universities,” Rosenstein said in a statement.

“The defendants stole research that cost the universities approximately $3.4bn to procure and maintain,” he said.

Reports say the stolen information was used by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps or sold for profit in Iran.

According to US officials, the charged individuals, as well as the organisation they work for, the Mabna Institute, will also be hit with economic sanctions.
