US deploys troops to Gabon as tension heightens in DRC

Amid fears of violent protests in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to a delay in announcing election results, the US has deployed soldiers to neighbouring Gabon.

The move according to reports is to assist US citizens, personnel in DRC if violent protests over recent elections threaten their security.

That much information was revealed by US President Donald Trump who told Congress on Friday that the first of about 80 troops arrived in Gabon on Wednesday to protect US citizens and diplomatic facilities.

“The first of these personnel arrived in Gabon on January 2, 2019, with appropriate combat equipment and supported by military aircraft,” Trump’s letter to Congress read.

“Additional forces may deploy to Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or the Republic of the Congo, if necessary for these purposes.

“These deployed personnel will remain in the region until the security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo becomes such that their presence is no longer needed.”

In a related development, opposition in the DRC has raised an alarm over a delay in announcing poll results claiming it could allow the ruling party room to manipulate election totals.

Reports say the electoral commission had been scheduled to publish provisional results on Sunday, but it said on Thursday that could be delayed because counting centres are still waiting for 80 percent of local vote tallies.
