US govt agrees on deal to avoid shutdown

A deal to avoid another partial US government shutdown has been agreed in principle according to reports.

The deal was struck after negotiators in the US Congress late on Monday to find a lasting solution to the matter.

Republican Senator Richard Shelby and Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey announced the agreement after a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill.

However, reports say negotiators scrambled on Monday to save the talks after they fell apart over the weekend due to disagreements over immigrant detention beds and physical barriers along the US-Mexico border.
