US imposes fresh sanctions on Russia over poisoning of ex-spy Skripal

The United States has again opened up the case of former double agent, Sergei Skripal who was allegedly poisoned by Russia in 2018.

This time, the US has responded by slapping fresh sanctions on Russia over the incident that took place in London which caused an international outcry, straining relations between the former Soviet Union and several Western countries.

Washington will oppose “the extension of any loan or financial or technical assistance to Russia” by financial institutions and put limits on US banks from purchasing Russian sovereign debt, US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement on Saturday.

Orgus also added that the new sanction will limit the export of goods and technology to Russia which could in turn prevent the country from accessing “billions of dollars of bilateral commercial activity with the United States”.

Meanwhile, Russia has responded to the sanctions by accusing the US of using their relationship as a political football ahead of its presidential election.
