US in direct talks with Venezuela military, urging defections against Maduro, reports say

VENEZUELA: Ostracized Maduro bows to pressure, frees 39 jailed opposition activists

A Senior White House official has revealed that the United States is actively in direct talks with the military in Venezuela urging them to abandon headstrong leader Nicolas Maduro.

The White House official also informed that the US is preparing new sanctions that will further pile pressure on Maduro to call for fresh polls of relinquish power.

The report comes after the European Union and a group of Latin American governments which kept a moderate line following the political crisis which has engulfed Venezuela called for dialogue and fresh elections.

Speaking in its inaugural meeting in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, the EU-backed International Contact Group on Venezuela said overly forceful intervention could aggravate the crisis in the country.

The EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini said a resolution ultimately must come from the people of Venezuela.
