US-MEXICO BORDER: Trump deploys 5,200 soldiers over migrant influx

US President Donald Trump has ordered through the Pentagon the deployment of no less than 5,200 troops at the US-Mexico border over refugee and migrant influx.

However, the move by Trump to halt a caravan of mostly Honduran migrants and refugees has prompted sharp rebuke from immigrant and human rights groups.

“Sending active military forces to our southern border is not only a huge waste of taxpayer money, but an unnecessary course of action that will further terrorise and militarise our border communities,” said Shaw Drake of the American Civil Liberties Union’s border rights centre at El Paso, Texas.

Reports say several thousand Honduran migrants moved last week through Guatemala, and some were trying to cross to Mexico local media said.

Some of the migrants and refugees hope to eventually enter the United States to escape violence and poverty.
