US Open champion, Sloane Stephens defeated Latvian Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to win her first Miami Open title– her sixth WTA triumph.

Stephens, who was the home favourite, relied heavily on her defence at the opening stages before putting her foot on the gas in the second set.

The 25-year-old world number 12 beat 20-year-old world number five Ostapenko in their first ever meeting to lift the 2018 Miami Open title in style.

Stephens had beaten three former Grand Slam champions– Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka– to make the final against another Grand Slam winner.

Ostapenko, 2017 French Open champion, had not dropped a set since the start of the tournament but fell to Stephens who, now, has never lost in a final.

The American, who will enter the world’s top 10 for the first time when the rankings are published next week, now has six WTA titles to her name.
