US says it may lift sanctions on Turkey over pastor's detention

Sanctions imposed on Turkey over the detention of clergyman Andrew Brunson may be lifted soon says US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The comments were made by Pompeo on Wednesday after his talks with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on an unscheduled trip.

In his remarks, Pompeo said; “We’ll have a decision on that shortly but some of the sanctions that were put in place were directly connected to Pastor Brunson and there’s a logic to now removing those as well,”

His comments are coming days after Brunson’s was released from detention after he was held for two years and was convicted and sentenced earlier this month of espionage and aiding terror groups, only to be quickly released on the basis of good behaviour and time served.
