US says plans underway to dismantle N'Korea's nuclear programme in 12 months

Plans are underway to dismantle North Korea’s nuclear programme in the next 12 months, so says White House national security adviser John Bolton.

He said he believes that the bulk of North Korea’s weapons programs could be dismantled within a year, although some experts say the complete process could take far more longer.

Bolton told CBS’s “Face the Nation” that Washington has devised a programme to dismantle North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction – chemical, biological and nuclear – and ballistic missile programs in a year, if there is full cooperation and disclosure from Pyongyang.

“If they have the strategic decision already made to do that and they’re cooperative, we can move very quickly,” he said. “Physically we would be able to dismantle the overwhelming bulk of their programs within a year.”

Bolton’s comments are coming hours after Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday, revealing that North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has tasked China’s President Xi Jingping with the responsibility of bringing an early end to sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.

The reports which informed that the meeting was staged last month in Beijing also noted that Kim told Xi that he wanted China’s help to end the sanctions because it successfully concluded a summit between the United States and North Korea on June 12.

During the meeting, Xi said he would make the “utmost effort” in response to Kim’s request, the Yomiuri said.
