US seeking regime change in Iran, President Rouhani claims

Fiery Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has revealed in a statement that the US is seeking a regime change in Tehran.

Rouhani who made the comments in a speech broadcast on state TV, said Washington is using psychological and economic warfare in its bid to overthrow the government of Iran.

The US is using “psychological and economic warfare” and questioning the legitimacy of the Islamic Republic to “pursue regime change” in Iran, Rouhani said on Sunday while commemorating the beginning of the academic year at Tehran University.

“Reducing the legitimacy of the system is their final goal. When they say getting rid of, regime change in their own words, how does regime change happen? Through reducing legitimacy, otherwise, a regime doesn’t change,” Rouhani said.

Rouhani’s comments are coming weeks after Saudi Arabia, UAE and Israel called for a regime change in Tehran.

The call was made by the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Washington, and the director of Israel’s Mossad spy agency.

The three countries joined ranks in pushing for a regime change in Tehran after making the call during a US summit against 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir called for the overthrow of the Iranian government, saying the Islamic Republic was unlikely to change on its own volition.
