US soldiers killed during operation in Afghanistan

The US and NATO forces have reported the death of two American service members who were killed during an operation in Afghanistan on Friday.

The US and NATO Resolute Support mission said the names of the service members killed during the operation were being withheld until after notification of the next of kin, in accordance with US Department of Defense policy.

The fatalities, which sum up to four US soldiers killed so far this year in Afghanistan, underscore the difficulties in bringing peace to the war-wrecked country even as Washington has stepped up efforts to find a way to end the 17-year war.

It was gathered that there are about 14,000 US forces in Afghanistan, support besieged Afghan forces as they struggle on two fronts facing a resurgent Taliban who now controls almost half the country, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) affiliate, which has sought to expand its footprint in Afghanistan even as its caliphate has crumbled in Syria and Iraq.

However, last year 13 US service members were killed in Afghanistan.
