USE OF PLASTIC BAGS: Don wants Nigerian Govt to emulate Rwanda, Kenya, others

The Federal Government of Nigeria has been advised to join over 40 countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, China, France, and Italy, that have banned, or partly banned, or taxed use of plastic bags in their country.

The advice was given by a professor of Environmental Management and Toxicology, Toyin Arowolo, when he delivered the 55th inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, during the week.

The professor believes that banning the use of plastic bags in the country will help to improve public health and ensure a safer environment.

According to Professor Arowolo, lack of education should be held responsible for the indifferent attitude of members of the public on the need to keep the environment clean.

Details of the lecture with “Environmental Degradation: Mortgaging our future for today’s gain,” as a theme, was made known to newsmen in a statement issued by the institution’s Head, Directorate of Public Relations, Dr. Linda Onwuka.

The don was said to have also during the lecture, urged religious leaders to make it a duty to sensitise their followers to the need to ensure a clean and safe environment.

The statement read in part, “Professor Arowolo also charged the federal and state governments to ensure adequate funding for the management and protection of the environment, as well as judicious application of the funds allocated and secured from donor agencies.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Kolawole Salako, who was chairman of the occasion, in his remarks described Arowolo as a devoted environmentalist who practices the dictate of his calling.
