According to the Dutch police, the shooting appeared to be a terrorist incident but at a press conference on Monday evening, prosecutor, Rutger Jeuken said it could have been motivated by “family reasons.”

Mr Tanis was known to Dutch police, Rutger added.

A local businessman told BBC Turkish that Gokmen Tanis had previously fought in Russia’s republic of Chechnya.

“He was arrested because of his connections with [IS] but released later,” he added.

Leaders from around the world, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, offered their condolences to the families of those who died in the attack.
