Ben Uwajumogu, the senator representing Imo North, has finally been sworn in after a protracted battle to receive his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He was sworn in by Senate President Ahmad Lawan during the plenary of the Senate on Friday.

The relieved Uwajumogu thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, Lawan, his party, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), and the people of his constituency for their support.

He told journalists after being sworn in that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unjustly refused to give him his certificate of return three weeks after an order of the court asked it to do so.

INEC had rejected the declaration of Uwajumogu as the winner of Imo North senatorial election over alleged irregularities, and ordered for a rerun.

But the senator dragged INEC to a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, which on July 5, declared that the electoral body’s refusal to issue Uwajumogu certificate of return was illegal.

After he stormed INEC office in Abuja alongside his supporters in protest, the commission on Thursday presented him with his certificate of return.
