VENEZUELLA: Opposition leader Guaidó’s top aide detained in Caracas

Venezuelan agents on Wednesday, detained Juan Guaido’s top aide Edgar Zambrano, using a tow truck to drag his vehicle away with him inside, BBC reports.

The arrest came a day after Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered that Mr Edgar Zambrano and six other National Assembly deputies were charged with treason for their alleged participation in the failed military uprising against president Maduro’s government.

According to reports, it is the first major detention since a failed attempt to spark a revolt to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Democratic Action party leader Carlos Prosperi told reporters that he had been at a party meeting with Mr Zambrano in the capital Caracas moments before he was arrested by agents from Venezuela’s Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin).

He added that the vehicle was surrounded. “They wouldn’t allow us to get to him. They brought a tow truck and his vehicle was towed away.”

Mr Juan Guaidó who tweeted about the arrest, described Mr Zambrano’s arrest as absurd.

The opposition leader, who has the support of more than 50 countries told BBC that he would consider asking the US to stage a military intervention.
