Venus Williams inches closer to 23rd Grand Slam, reaches semi-finals

American Tennis star, Venus Williams has made it to her 23rd Grand Slam semi-final after a thrilling win over Petra Kvitova in a final-set tie-break early Wednesday.

The 37-year-old Williams won the Czech professional 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) in an enthralling battle under the lights on Arthur Ashe to go one win away from the final of the 2017 US Open.

Despite her loss, 27-year-old Kvitova can take great heart from her displays in New York, which comes just nine months after being the victim of a knife attack in her home.

“I was so fortunate to win that match,” said Williams after the victory.

“It came down to the wire and I’m hoping we have more matches like that.”

She next faces Sloane Stephens in the last-four, targeting a first US Open final appearance in 15 years.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility of an all-American semifinal clash as Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe will be playing for spots in the last four later on Wednesday.
