Venus Williams reaches 2017 Wimbledon final in bid for 6th title

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams have beaten Britain’s Johanna Konta in a semi-final match on Thursday to book a place in Saturday’s final.

The 37-year-old American played superbly to win 6-4 6-2 against the home favourite, and will take on Garbine Muguruza in the final after the Spaniard spanked Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1 6-1 earlier on Centre Court.

Sixth seed Konta, 26, had her hopes of becoming the first British woman in a Wimbledon singles final since 1977 crashed by the 10th seed, but is set to break into the WTA top five for the first time.

Williams will be playing her ninth final at the All England Club, where she dominated between 2000 and 2009, winning five titles and finishing as runner-up in another three finals.

“I’ve played a lot of finals here,” Williams told reporters after the victory.

“One more win will be amazing. It won’t be a given but I’ll give it my all.”

Williams is the oldest Grand Slam singles finalist since Martina Navratilova who finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 1994.

And she will be hoping to lift her first Grand Slam title since 2008.
