VOTING IRREGULARITIES: EU mulls sanctions against Venezuela

Days after a group of Latin leaders decided to recall their envoys from Venezuela over the re-election of President Nicola Maduro, the European Union is mulling fresh sanctions against the oil rich country following an election which lacked credibility.

Reports say the block has agreed to ‘swiftly’ adopt new sanctions against Venezuelan officials while it also called for “fresh presidential elections”.

The EU’s foreign ministers said in a statement that the vote which brought back Maduro to power “lacked any credibility as the electoral process did not ensure the necessary guarantees for inclusive and democratic elections.

“The EU will act swiftly, according to established procedures, with the aim of imposing additional targeted and reversible restrictive measures, that do not harm the Venezuelan population, whose plight the EU wishes to alleviate,” it added.

Maduro’s re-election is causing negative ripples in the Americas as a group of Latin leaders have also decided to recall their envoys from the South American country.

Reports say 14 members of the Lina Group have revealed that they will recall their envoys to protest against what it said was Venezuela’s failure to hold a “free and fair” election.

The group in a statement said the members’ diplomats in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, would return to their respective countries for consultations.

The group consists of Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia.
