Watford’s injury time winner silences Arsenal

A 92nd-minute goal by Watford’s Tom Cleverley made the difference against Arsenal in their Premier League week 8 clash at Vicarage Road on Saturday night.

The win for Marco Silva’s side was their first home win of an impressive start to the campaign.

Arsenal opened the scoring in the first half through a Per Mertesacker 39th-minute goal.

After the interval, the home side were then awarded a controversial penalty when Richarlyson tumbled under debatable contact from Hector Bellerin, and Troy Deeney converted it to level with the Gunners.

Watford grew in confidence and created their own opportunities, and their hard work paid off in injury time when Cleverley fired in the winner to complete the comeback.

“You can talk and talk and talk. They scored. It (the penalty) was a scandalous decision and there is little we can do about it,” Arsene Wenger remarked after the defeat.

He added, “I think our level dropped in the second half and we missed many chances to kill the game.

“After that, at 1-1, there was no need to panic. I believe that on the second goal we can only look at ourselves.”

But Silva said, “We are obviously happy. “Our second half was really good. We have three important points and we want to stay in this moment.”

With the win, Watford climb to fourth on the table on 15 points, two points ahead of Arsenal who lie on sixth.
