Wenger insists finishing in top four is a trophy

Arsenal have to finish the job at home --Wenger

With only 10 games left before the end of the English Premier League this season, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose side is currently on sixth, has again likened a top four finish to winning a trophy.

The embattled manager, who has led the Gunners to Champions League qualification for the past 20 seasons, said his side’s struggles this season prove finishing in the top four is “not as easy as it looks.”

In 2012, Wenger had compared finishing in the top four to winning a trophy – a view that was recently echoed by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola – and was quoted by the Frenchman.

“If you listen to Guardiola, he said the other day that to finish in the top four in England is a trophy because it is so difficult,” Wenger said during his Tuesday press conference.

Arsenal are currently seven points off the top four, but Wenger believes it is possible to make it to the UEFA Champions League next season by finishing at least fourth.

“It [finishing in the top four] is a good challenge but I think it is perfectly possible,” said Wenger.

“I have done it for 20 years and it looked always like nothing. Suddenly, it becomes important so I’m quite pleased people realise that it is not as easy as it looks.”

“We are fighting to have a positive end of season. That’s why you want the fans to stand behind the team. Let’s finish as strong as we can. Let’s show our mental resilience.”

Arsenal will host West Ham on Wednesday at the Emirates Stadium.
