‘We’re ready to welcome Ambode to our party’— PDP

The Lagos state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its readiness to welcome Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of the state, into its fold if he decides to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Taofeek Gani, publicity secretary of the party, said this in an interview in Lagos on Thursday.

Gani was reacting to reports that APC leaders in the state may have adopted Jide Sanwo-Olu, a former commissioner in the state, to succeed Ambode.

“Any forward-looking party would not have rejected its main opponent joining it, especially a big personality like Ambode,” Taofeek said.

“We are ready to welcome him (Ambode) to our party if he decides to join for any reason. We are very ready to accept him if he decides to join us.

“You see PDP is a party for all, so far value will be added. We cannot turn down our opponents, especially a big personality like Ambode. Therefore, he is welcome. His joining us will definitely add value and boost our chances to win the state.”

He said the party would accord him all the rights and privileges with the existing members to realise his political ambitions.

Unconfirmed reports emerged recently that the party had offered automatic governorship ticket to oil mogul, Femi Otedola, which he accepted.

As at now, however, Deji Doherty and Jimi Agbaje, 2015’s candidate of the party, are believed to be among those confirmed to have picked the PDP nomination forms for the 2019 governorship election in Lagos.
