Senators insist Nigeria's debt profile alarming

Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has described threats by the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, to drag him to court as an empty boast.

He also said that the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the bribery allegation against Oshiomhole is thoroughly investigated will finally destroy his ability and that of his APC party to continue to talk of any anti-graft battle.

Saraki was reacting to Oshiomhole threat to drag him to court should he fail to mention names of those that he allegedly received kickbacks from during the ruling party’s recent primaries.

Oshiomhole had made the threat on Thursday after Saraki was quoted as saying that he was not qualified to be in politics let alona a party chairman based on allegations that he collected bribes from APC aspirants during the party’s primaries both in Naira and hard currencies.

But in a statement on Friday by his Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki said that Nigerians are eagerly awaiting how President Buhari will handle the serious allegations of bribery levelled against Oshiomhole.

On the former Edo State governor’s threat to sue him over his statement that he ought to quit politics on moral grounds Saraki said Oshiomhole was making “empty boast because he (Saraki) will be ready to meet him (Oshiomhole) in court.”

He said, “Nigerians are waiting to see how the President will handle the serious allegations against his party chairman. We expect the President with his anti-corruption campaign to institute thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations against his party chairman.

“The failure of the President to get to the root of the matter will finally destroy his ability and that of the party to continue to talk of any anti-graft battle. The President should let the investigation be thorough, open and transparent. This is no time for any cover-up”, he stated.

Saraki maintained that until the outcome of a thorough investigation is known to Nigerians and the APC chairman is cleared of the allegations against him, Oshiomhole is not on a firm ground to talk about moralty or fight against corruption.
