Why Buhari will extend Idris’ tenure

Published

on

There were strong indications over the weekend that President Muhammadu Buhari will extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, who is supposed to have bowed out from the Force last week having enlisted in 1984.

However, top security sources said the President will take the action, because “it is politically inexpedient now, about a month to the commencement of the general elections. He wants the IGP to help in ensuring security during the elections.”

A source, who spoke with New Telegraph correspondent, said the action will also be taken in consonance with the extension of the tenure of the current service chiefs about a year ago.

“I don’t know why the hue and cry over his tenure elongation. It is the prerogative of the President to elongate the tenure of any service chief, and he has done that in the past.
