Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, has alleged an attempt on his life by men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) and soldiers of the Nigerian Army attached to the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

The alleged attack reportedly occurred at Nwanja Junction on Trans-Amadi road.

Spokesman to the governor, Simeon Nwakaudu said the incident took place on Saturday while the governor was on project inspection in the state.

He claimed the SARs personnel and soldiers in the minister’s convoy hit the governor’s escort rider and attacked the policemen in the pilot car.

Nwakaudu added that one of Amaechi’s aide-de-camp identified as Debewari supervised the alleged attack “which included damage of cameras held by journalists”.

The statement read, “Also part of the attack, was the commander of Rivers SARS, Mr. Akin Fakorede who received the minister of transportation at the Port Harcourt International Airport and accompanied him on his trip.

“After the attack, the Rivers state governor continued with his inspection of Projects. Governor Wike was not harmed, despite the attack.

“The minister of transportation had over 50 SARS personnel, soldiers and mobile policemen in his motorcade.”

Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Femi Fani-Kayode, decried the alleged assassination attempt on Wike, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to call his “mad dog to order”.

Commenting on the incident via his twitter handle, the former minister of aviation said, “Using SARS thugs to attempt to murder Gov. Wike and knocking down his outrider with a car will not help Rotimi Ameachi win Rivers state. It will only lead to bloodshed, reprisals and a vicious cycle of violence, death and destruction. I urge @MBuhari to call his mad dog to order”.
