English Premier League club, Wolverhampton Wanderers have retired the no. 1 jersey as a tribute to former goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

The former Super Eagles keeper announced his retirement from professional football last month after his doctors suggested he quit the game.

He had been fighting cancer for a year, and says he thinks it is best for him to stop playing because of the toll the treatment of the ailment has taken on his body.

32-year-old Ikeme has been with Wolverhampton throughout his career, where he made 207 appearances.

Goalkeepers Rui Patricio will wear No. 11, John Ruddy will be No. 21 while Will Norris will wear No. 31.

10-capped Ikeme stood as Super Eagles’ first choice between the sticks at the start of the team’s race to Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, before he was diagnosed with the ailment.

He was however named as an honorary member of the Nigerian squad at the World Cup by team manager, Gernot Rohr.

Meanwhile, following his retirement, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has offered him a job in the technical crew of the senior national team.
