Woman arraigned in court for attempt to jump into Lagos Lagoon

A Lagos based business woman, Taiwo Titilayo-Momoh, who recently wanted to jump into Lagos lagoon over N18.7million debt was on Monday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on charge of attempt to commit murder.

The 51-year-old textile dealer at Balogun Market however pleaded not guilty to the charge before the court presided over by the Chief Magistrate, Mr A.T. Elias.

But the prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, objected to her not guilty plea and argued that the Titilayo-Momoh committed the offence on March 24 on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

Omisakin said that but for the intervention of security operatives who prevented the accused from jumping inside the lagoon, she would have committed suicide.

They should tamper Justice with mercy. Leave the woman alone and let her be.

Noooo. If they leave her alone, others won’t learn as they will believe that they will always be pardon whenever they make attempt to commit suicide. Let her suffer the consequences of what she did but mild judgement like 5years imprisonment.

Is five years imprisonment a mild judgement or punishment? It’s better they just flog her if it were to be in Sharia law than to sentence her to life imprisonment.

I am of the fact that the woman should be empowered to pay her debts instead of being punished.

Now, she will have to pay the money she wanted to kill herself for. The court that asked her to be bailed with 500k naira didn’t make any provision to ease her tension, na wa
