World Cup 2018: Australia snatch draw against Denmark

Australia kept their hopes alive of continuing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup race after they held Denmark to a 1-1 draw in a Group C encounter in Samara on Thursday.

Their captain Mile Jedinak scored a 38th-minute penalty – his second in the tournament – to earn them their first point in Russia.

Christian Eriksen had put Denmark ahead with a super finish after Nicolai Jorgensen’s clever lay-off early in the game.

It was a controversial penalty awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) review that ensured both sides shared the spoils.

Yussuf Poulsen’s close-range handball was analysed on video before the referee pointed to the spot, and Jedinak converted the kick.

Denmark won their first game against Peru, and so are now on 4 poins – at the top of the group table ahead of France.

The other game of the group between France and Peru holds later on Thursday.

While France will hope to seal their spot in the round of 16, Peru will be fighting to stay alive in the competition. For if Peru lose, they are out!
