The opening game of Group E of the 2018 FIFA World Cup saw Serbia seal a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica at the Samara Stadium in Russia on Sunday.

After a goalles first half, a 56th-minute strike by Aleksandar Kolarov sealed the win for the dominant Serbs.

He scored from a free kick that he curled over the Costa Rica wall some 25-yards out and found the top corner of the net, beating Keylor Navas on goal.

Costa Rica mounted little pressure afterwards, but the Serbs remained focus and saw the game end to their advantage, although Aleksandar Mitrovic did miss clear chances to double their lead.

The other group E encounter between Brazil and Switzerland will hold later on Sunday at the Rostov-on-Don Stadium.

Serbia’s next match will be against Switzerland while Costa Rica battle Brazil – both on Friday.
