World leaders pledge to save 'Mother Earth' after Trump pulled US out of Paris climate accord

A day after controversial US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of Paris climate accord, world leaders have pledged to save the earth signalling their commitment to the accord.

On Friday, China and Europe pledged to unite to save what German Chancellor Angela Merkel called “our Mother Earth”, standing firmly against Trump’s decision to take the United States out of the Paris climate change pact.

Trump’s move was “a big mistake”, said Donald Tusk, one of the European Union’s top officials.

Other countries, including India, also signaled their commitment to the accord while Russian President Vladimir Putin said that while the United States should have remained in the 2015 deal, he would not judge Trump.

Trump pulled his country out of the 2016 Paris climate accord in line with his election campaign promise, even as the withdrawal could take up to four years.

He made the announcement during a White House Rose Garden speech but before that, he informed Congress about his decision preparing Republican legislators with arguments and lines to take in the face of an expected blow back.

Trump said it was his solemn duty to protect “America and its citizens” and that the US would “withdraw from the Paris climate accord, but begin negotiations to re-enter the Paris accord or a new transaction on terms that are fair to the United States”.
