WTA: Kerber to lose No. 1 spot after Wimbledon crash

Top seed Angelique Kerber will lose her world no. 1 ranking after her fourth round defeat to Garbine Muguruza at the ongoing Wimbledon Open.

The Spanish 14th seed, Muguruza, won an enthralling match 4-6 6-4 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes on Monday afternoon.

Kerber, who was a finalist in the tournament last year, had needed to reach Saturday’s final in order to have a chance of retaining her ranking in the WTA.

But her eventual crash at the All England Club will see her off the summit, with world n. 2, Simona Halep still in the race for the title.

Halep is only one win away from claiming top spot. She will play Victoria Azarenka in the last 16.

But if Halep does not reach the last four, 25-year-old Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic will move to top spot despite her second round exit at Wimbledon.
