Nigeria’s table tennis team have failed in their race to clinch a spot in the Championship Division after losing in the quarterfinal of the ongoing World Team Table Tennis (WTTC) Championships in Halmstad, Sweden.
The Nigerian team, comprising of Segun Toriola, Aruna Quadri, Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo, lost 3-0 to Slovakia in the Men’s Second Division quarterfinals on Friday – their second defeat to the Slovakians in the competition.
Quadri lost the team’s first game 3-1 (11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4) to Pistej Lubomi.
Nigeria hoped to level in the second game but Abiodun’s effort was not enough as he lost 3-2 (11-5,12-14,11-8,9-11,7-11) to Novota Samuel.
Omotayo also lost 3-1 (12-10,7-11,5-11) to Wang Yang, as Slovakia advance to the semifinal.
