MTN's suit against AGF stalled over absence of judge

South African telecommunications company, MTN has announced the closure of all its service shops in Nigeria.

The telecoms company in a message sent to its subscribers on Wednesday, disclosed the closure of its shops and the operation of only its online platforms.

“Yello! Our shops are unavailable today. You can reach us on Twitter- @MTN180, MTNonline.com/Livechat, chat on MyMTN App. For Call Center dial 180,” the message by MTN read.

The closure by MTN shops may not be unconnected with reprisal attacks targeted at businesses owned by South Africans by Nigerians protesting fresh xenophobic attacks targeted at foreigners living in South Africa.

There have been attempts by some Nigerians to raze some South Africa-owned companies in Nigeria, including MTN, Dstv, and Shoprite.

In a related development, the Owerri wing of Shoprite, located along Egbu road in Imo State, has been taken over by men of the state police command, over fears of an attack by Nigerians on businesses owned by South Africans in the state.

Reports say policemen are fully in charge of the security of the establishment, closing all the gates into Shoprite, as they only opened a narrow gate through which some staff were allowed access.

Similarly, men of the Enugu State have set up security apparatus in the state over possible reprisal attacks by residents of Enugu and its environs on South African businesses.
