Young scavenger sentenced to eight strokes for goat theft
A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday, sentenced 21-year-old scavenger Ibrahim Usman to eight strokes of the cane for stealing a she-goat.
Usman admitted to the crime and pleaded for leniency, explaining to the court that he had been led astray by his friends.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, while delivering the verdict, expressed some leniency due to Usman’s immediate confession of guilt. “The court has shown mercy in this instance,” Emmanuel stated, before emphasizing the importance of reform. He cautioned Usman to avoid further criminal activities, noting that future transgressions would not be met with the same compassion.

The prosecution, represented by Insp Chidi Leo, outlined the details of the case, indicating that the theft occurred on October 6 in Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna. Leo reported that Usman was apprehended by local vigilantes while in possession of the goat along Ali Akilu Road. Under police interrogation, Usman confessed to stealing the goat from his neighbor’s property.
Leo confirmed that Usman’s actions violated the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
