ZAMFARA: Ex-bandits are helping to fight banditry, Matawalle says

The declaration of Bello Matawalle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the March 9 governorship election in Zamfara State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is about to be contested in the court of law.

The move to challenge Matawalle’s declaration as Zamfara governor is being mooted by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on the grounds that he was not qualified to have contested any elections because he did not obtain the basic requirements of the law.

That much information was revealed by Barrister Ifeanyi Mbaeri, while speaking to reporters in Abuja moments after withdrawing the petition of his client (APGA’s candidate in the election, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi) who earlier challenged the declaration of Mukhtar Shehu Idris and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) by INEC as the winner of the gubernatorial election in the state.

According to Mbaneri, Shinkafi’s legal team was looking at the possibility of challenging INEC’s declaration of PDP and  Mutawalle as governor of Zamfara State because he is ineligible.

Mbaneri also added that his clients, Shinkafi and APGA, may likely file a petition at the election tribunal to challenge INEC’s decision to declare Matawalle as governor of Zamfara State.

The move comes after Governor Matawalle met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday at the State House, Abuja, to brief him over measures so far taken by his (Matawalle’s) administration to tackle armed banditry in the state.

This was made known in a statement by Matawalle’s spokesperson, Yusuf Idris, who said the governor briefed the President on the measures so far taken by his administration in the state since he assumed office.

Idris quoted the governor as saying he requested the support of the president towards bringing to an end the menace of banditry bedeviling the state in recent times.
