ZIMBABWE: Mugabe agrees to resign, but gives conditions

Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe has met with the Army generals over terms for his resignation.

Sources within the government told CNN on Monday, that a letter has been drafted in that regard with the army generals agreeing to many of his demands.

According to the reports, in the deal, Mugabe and his wife will be granted full immunity and he would keep his private properties.

For the resignation to formally take place, however, a letter must first be sent to the speaker of Parliament, the source also said.

Mugabe surprised his country men on Sunday who had expected him to announce his resignation.

Instead, he said, “The (ruling Zanu-PF) party congress is due in a few weeks and I will preside over its processes,”

Rather than douse tension with his expected resignation, Mugabe eulogized the three pillars of power in Zimbabwe that wanted him out of power – the military, the ruling party and the war veterans movement..
