Africa’s longest serving President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 92nd birthday amid wide spread drought in his country by staging private celebrations with a major event planned for next week.

Also, the state broadcaster led bulletins with birthday messages for Mugabe who is the world’s oldest head of state and has been in power for 36 years.

Opponents of Mugabe have criticised the lavish birthday which costs up to £700,000 yearly to organise with some Zimbabwean’s bitterly critical last Friday outside a banquet to raise funds for the celebrations.

“Maybe they have no shame, openly feasting amid such hunger,” said Denias Munongoza, 27, a college graduate who sells cigarettes and condoms.
