Zimbabwe President set to halt opposition move to contest election result in court

A submission has been filed by the President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa in the land’s highest court opposing a court challenge to his victory by main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

There is palpable tension in the South African country as the inauguration of Mnangagwa as president is being delayed after opposition contested the recently staged election result in court.

According to Paul Mangwana, the ruling party’s legal affairs secretary and one of Mnangagwa’s lawyers, Chamisa would now be required to respond to Mnangagwa’s application before the matter is set down for a hearing.

“We have successfully filed our opposition papers to this application, which we think is just a waste of time but that’s for the courts to decide,” Mangwana told reporters outside the Constitutional Court.
“Our team of legal practitioners is ready to meet the MDC Alliance in court,” he said.

Recall that Zimbabwe’s opposition coalition, the MDC alliance had filed their paperwork with Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court on Friday, alleging the result of the July 30 vote had been rigged in favour of incumbent Mnangagwa, of the ruling ZANU-PF party.
