Zuma to appear in court over $2.5bn corruption charges

Lawyers representing embattled ex-South African President Jacob Zuma have revealed that their client is set for an April 6th appearance in court to face charges of corruption over a $2.5 billion arms deal struck years back.

The decision to drag Zuma to court who announced his resignation on February 14, 2018 came after the National Prosecuting Authority said it would seek to prosecute him on 16 charges, including fraud, racketeering, corruption and money laundering.

“It was served at my Durban offices. The court date is April 6,” Zuma’s lawyer Michael Hulley told Reuters by telephone, referring to the summons. He declined to comment on how his client would respond.

According to reports, Zuma was deputy president at the time of the arms deal which is now threatening to drag him down.

Schabir Shaikh, his former financial adviser, was also found guilty and jailed in 2005 for trying to solicit bribes for Zuma from a French arms company.
