10 months later, Nigerian govt claims Sen. Melaye lied over assassination attempt claim, drags him to court

Senator Dino Melaye has been dragged before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, by the Federal Government over an assassination claim he made in April 2017.

Melaye had ten months ago alleged an assassination attempt on his life and had in the information he provided to the police on the matter, fingered the Chief of Staff to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Mr. Edward David, as having something to do with the attempt.

But in a suit marked CR/106/18 and filed before the court on January 31, 2018 by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Melaye was accused of falsely accusing Governor Bello’s Chief of Staff in the information he gave to the police about the assassination attempt on his life.

The charges signed by Mr. Magaji Labaran, explained that the police in the course of investigating the matter, discovered that Melaye’s assassination attempt claim was false.

In the first count, the Federal Government accused Melaye of intentionally giving false information to the police to frame Bello’s Chief of Staff as the mastermind of the assassination attempt on him at his hometown in Ayetoro-Gbede, Kogi State in April last year.

Melaye was accused in the second count, of making false statement of facts in a phone conversation with Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, a son to the late former Governor of Kogi State, Abubakar Audu, with the intention of harming the reputation of David.

The offences are punishable under sections 140 and 393 of the Penal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.
